‘Marvellous Strange’

‘Marvellous Strange’

Special and deluxe editions of Martin Duffy’s Effigy: Of Graven Image and Holy Idol have now arrived at Three Hands Press and are shipping in the coming weeks. Pictured here is the deluxe edition, bound in quarter chestnut goatskin and brick cloth, limited to 63 hand-numbered and slipcased copies.

Last night Daniel A. Schulke of Three Hands Press spoke at Five Months Gallery in San Francisco in support of Effigy, with a talk entitled “Effigies, Poppets, Simulacra, and Embodied Occult Images.” This event was just one in a month-long exhibition called Marvellous Strange, featuring the original work of Raven Ebner and others.  Discussed in the talk were the varying traditions of image magic populating varied historical strata, as well as the rationales and methods for animating magical fetishes. Raven also spoke to the crowd about the creation of the poppet and effigy images for Martin’s book. Our thanks to Annetta Black of Odd Salon for her grace and finesse in curating this event, and to Clint and Alexis who worked the sales desk.
